Citation a movie by ace filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan is out and streaming on Netflix. And as expected it is generating a whole lot of rave reviews.
The movie based real life events tells a story of an unassuming postgraduate student, Moremi Olúwa (Temi Otedola) who accuses her lecturer, Prof. Lucien N'Daye (Jimmy Jean Louis) of rape and is determined to bring him to justice.
In his usual skilful tradition, Afolayan who in the past has directed major Nollywood Blockbusters did justice to this flick. The Cinematography, directing and perhaps Screenplay was on point. That's always a given when it comes to products from the KAP Productions and Golden Effects.
But it doesn't explain the 2hrs plus duration of the feature length movie. Also the casting seems to have a left a lot to be desired. One cannot help but wonder why the demanding role of the lead character went to a new entrant who's command of the Yoruba language flawed at every utterance. Though not the main medium of communication but knowing the filmmakers philosophy, you would know this is very unKAPpy. Also I don't think the acting was that convincing so I'd say she "pulled it off"
Another fascinating thing about the casting is the use of two main Nollywood actors, Ini Edo and Yomi Fash Lanso who played Prof Lucien's legal Rep as extreme minors. Sorry mates, Citation is not for your resume.
But that's not to say that all was bad. Joke Silva who played Angela, Moremi' s Legal aid and Guardian and Gabriel Afolayan, Moremi 's medical student boyfriend, Koyejo did live up to expectation in their roles. So did Jimmy Jean Louis
In all the movie has a lot to offer when it comes to showcasing African cultures. It captured the beauty of Senegal as well as profiling the sights of one of Nigeria' s great citadel of learning, Obafemi Awolowo University. Featuring Afrobeat (not Afrobeats) exponent, Seun Kuti and the Egypt 80 band also added colours to the movie.
