Beverly Naya’s feature-length documentary on ‘colourism’ in Nigeria is undoubtedly an outstanding presentation and lends additional credence to the ever-improving subject depth, scripting and interpretation as far as Nollywood is concerned.
Speaking to various personalities and industry stakeholders, including Eku Edewor, Hilda Dokunbo, Phyno, and Bobrisky, the British-born Nigerian actress was able to highlight multiple social perceptions of dark skin and the shortcomings of bleaching in what indulgent individuals perceive to be a pursuit of true beauty.
The documentary, which won the African Magic’s Viewer Choice Award and earned an AMAA nomination, climaxed with a family reunion scene depicting that real identity, self-confidence and true beauty (dark or light) is best realised when you know who you are and where you’re from.
