A STREAMING WEEKEND WITH CHIOMA CHUKWUKA - AKPOTHA

From the inception of Nollywood, particularly during the DVD era, to the ongoing and dynamic era of contemporary screen Nollywood, only a few actors have consistently demonstrated unwavering brilliance in their craft, whether in leading or supporting roles. Chioma Akpotha Chukwuka rates high on that list.

A natural role interpreter, Chioma had no formal education in acting; instead, she pursued a degree in banking and finance following her secondary education at one of the prestigious federal government girls' colleges. Her illustrious career commenced in 2000 when she debuted in the movie Apple and went on to star in The Handkerchief and The Musketeer in the same year. Between 2001 and 2005, she graced an average of three movies annually.

In 2005, Chioma took a lead role alongside Francis Duru in Tchidi Chikere's movie "Sins of the Flesh." Her outstanding portrayal of the innocent Scholastica, grappling with the challenges of early, outside-wedlock pregnancy, earned her the 2007 AMAA Best Actress in Lead Role Award. This marked the beginning of numerous nominations she accumulated until 2022 in "Omo Ghetto: The Saga."

In 2014, she was practically nominated for “Best Actress in a Lead Role” in every award system for her brilliant portrayal of family lawyer Chy in the movie Accident: GIAMA, AMAA, Nollywood Movies Awards, Nigerian Entertainment Awards, and City People Entertainment Awards.

Chioma also ventured to both sides of the camera, producing and starring in "On Bended Knees," directed by Lancelot Imasuen. The movie earned three GIAMA nominations for Cinematography, Best Drama, and Best Actress. She went on to produce six more movies.

Her impressive resume, boasting nearly 300 movies, numerous nominations, and wins, has translated into success in screen Nollywood. She has secured a 'third name,' excelling in significant support roles in hit movies such as Funke Akindele’s "Omo Ghetto: The Saga," where she earned a nomination for Best Support Actress. Chioma starred as a co-lead in Omoni Oboli’s revolutionary drama "Wives on Strike."

Her exceptional acting skills caught the attention of industry heavyweights such as Kunle Afolayan, who cast her as Mama Chidi in his first Netflix Original instalment, "Swallow." Additionally, she played a vital role in Bolanle Austen Peters’ 2021 "Collison Course," which won the 2022 AMCVA Best Movie (W’Africa). Jadesola Osiberu made a brilliant choice by casting her as a street trader and mother to one of the lead characters, Ify, in the 2023 crime action thriller "Gangs of Lagos." Chioma's portrayal of Mama Ify provided an accurate representation of contemporary Lagos. The producers of the two-part horror movie Madam KOI KOI were discerning in selecting her for the prominent non-dialogue role of Sister Silence.

Chioma Akpotha Chukwuka is more than an actress; she is a testament to the enduring spirit of Nollywood and a force that continues to shape its narrative with grace, resilience, and cinematic brilliance.
