Born and raised in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria, Damasus, who is also a singer, began her acting career in the 1990s right after bagging a Theatre Arts degree from the prestigious University of Lagos. Initially, She started as a singer, lending her vocals to radio jingles before transitioning into Nollywood.
Her first screen presence was in a movie titled Abuse in 1992. In 1995, she appeared in Amaka Igwe’s Blockbuster, Rattlesnake and Emem Isong’s debut movie, Breaking Point in 1996. Though undecided about a full-time acting career, Damasus continued as a studio session singer at the famous Klink studios till 1999 when she got another role in the movie, Face of a Liar.
With Breaking Point & Rattlesnake, Damasus was able to prove her prowess and at the turn of the millennium, she began a remarkable journey, rising to fame and sustaining a screen presence that earned an AMAA Best Actress in a Leading Role nomination (2009) and two Best Actress wins at the Nigeria Entertainment (2007) and Golden Icons Academy Awards (2012).
She gained widespread recognition for her compelling roles in films such as Emotional Pain, Real Love—where she delivered a stunning performance as a blind woman—Submission, The Bridesmaid, Intruder, Stand Alone, Games Women Play, Behind Closed Doors, Gone, and Two Brides and a Baby, which won her the 2019 Golden Icons Academy Award (GIAMA) for Best Lead Actress.
In 2014 Damasus took a short hiatus to relocate and settle in the US and returned in 2017 starring in a Robert Peters movie, Affairs of the Heart. In 2018, she expanded her creative reach by co-executive producing and starring in her film, Between. Written and directed by Daniel Ademinokan, the film made waves, garnering over one million views within 24 hours of its YouTube premiere. In 2025, while working on her latest production, Captured, she also featured in the Netflix U.S. drama Mo, portraying the character Ginika. A snippet of her performance was prominently used in promotional content for the series on Netflix’s Strong Black Lead platform.
