MALAIKA - Toyin Abraham Trades Laughs for Tears in Emotional Drama Streaming on Circuits TV

With Malaika, Toyin Abraham takes a bold step away from her trademark high-energy comedies to explore more sensitive and layered themes, chief among them, childlessness in marriage and the emotional fallout that leads to a tense stepmother-stepdaughter conflict.

Starring Abraham, Emeka Ike, and Pelumi Olawuni, the 2023 box office success is a compelling drama penned by former child actor Samuel Ajirebi and directed by Steve Sodiya.

Abraham plays Adetutu Njoku, a woman burdened by her inability to conceive. Her frustration seeps into every area of her life, straining her marriage to Ebuka (Ike), alienating her colleagues, and most painfully, sparking constant friction with her 16-year-old stepdaughter, Chichi. Still grieving the loss of her biological mother, Chichi has her emotional wounds, so when Adetutu lashes out, she fires back, creating a cycle of conflict that leaves Ebuka helplessly caught in the middle.

Despite the bitterness, both women are quietly seeking healing. Chichi finds solace through a chance meeting with Obinna (played by Uzor Arukwe), a Keke Marwa taxi rider and his warm, supportive family, while Adetutu discovers and embarks on a spiritual journey that gradually offers her a path to peace.

The production may have a few minor hitches, but Abraham is rightly praised for her eclectic and pan-African casting, which notably includes celebrated Kenyan comedienne and actress Anne Kansiime. The film also features strong performances from Chinyere Winifred, Muyiwa Ademola, and Ruby Ojiakor, with notable appearances by Dele Odule, Remi Surutu, Peju Ogunmola, and Odunlade Adekola.

A heartfelt and thought-provoking drama, Malaika is now streaming on Circuits TV.
