David Oyelowo and Ava DuVernay are officially reuniting for a new contemporary thriller titled Heist of Benin. The project marks their first collaboration since the Oscar-nominated Selma, which cemented their creative partnership over a decade ago.
The film will be produced by Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon Productions, with Studiocanal partnering on financing and international distribution. DuVernay—who made history as the first African American woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Director—is set to direct, while Oyelowo will star in and produce the film.
Speaking on the reunion, Oyelowo, known for Queen of Katwe and A United Kingdom, said, “Ava and I have been looking for the right story to tell together again — Heist of Benin is that story. It’s thrilling and high-powered.” DuVernay echoed the sentiment, describing the project as one that explores deeply resonant and timely themes both filmmakers are passionate about.
No additional cast members have been announced at this time, with further details on production and release expected in the coming months.
