When Funke Akindele puts her name behind a movie these days, you are naturally going to pay attention. The star actress and filmmaker takes the producer and co-director's seat on Where Is Mr Right?, a romantic drama streaming on Prime Video, while also making an appearance as the rather nosy neighbour.
But this isn't another big-screen Funke Akindele spectacle. Instead, Where Is Mr Right? gives Omowunmi Dada centre stage as Olubunmi, a thirty-something events coordinator who desperately wants to get married. And desperate really is the word.
Olubunmi prays for a husband, fantasises whenever she sees happy couples and appears determined to find Mr Right despite repeated advice from family and friends to take things easy. Even getting involved with a man who conveniently forgets to tell her he is married — and subsequently being attacked by his wife — isn't quite enough to stop the search.
Then there are Femi and Bridget Adelana, played by Nosa Rex and Bisola Aiyeola, a couple Olubunmi regularly sees jogging around the estate and admires for what appears to be their happy marriage. Through them, she meets Bridget's brother, Dexy, played by Blossom Chukwujekwu, while coordinating his 50th birthday. Almost immediately, another potential Mr Right appears on her radar.
But Where Is Mr Right? soon begins to reveal something much darker behind the relationships Olubunmi so easily romanticises. The apparently happy marriage between Femi and Bridget is anything but. Bridget is obsessively jealous, regularly threatens her husband and sometimes harms herself. One such incident eventually results in a terrible misunderstanding involving Dexy, leaving Femi dead and our marriage-hunting Olubunmi caught up in the aftermath.
Looking for a husband and implicated in a murder.
And then comes the twist. It could easily feel like an escape route for the narrative, but perhaps it is actually where Where Is Mr Right? makes its most interesting point.
Olubunmi spends so much time imagining the happiness she sees in other people's relationships that she never really knows what exists behind closed doors. The supposedly perfect couple she admires becomes a nightmare, while her desperate pursuit of marital bliss takes her somewhere she could never have imagined.
Omowunmi Dada carries that journey convincingly, moving Olubunmi between romantic fantasy, desperation and increasingly chaotic situations. And with Bisola Aiyeola, Blossom Chukwujekwu and Nosa Rex forming the principal supporting cast, there is enough experience around her to keep the increasingly dramatic story engaging.
The ending, however, leaves an interesting question.
Could the unexpected turn of events simply be setting things up for a second part? After all, Olubunmi still hasn't found Mr Right.
Or is the twist itself the message?
Perhaps Where Is Mr Right? is simply using one very dramatic turn to make a familiar point: marriage cannot be forced, appearances can be deceptive, and being desperate to find Mr Right can sometimes stop you from seeing what is actually right in front of you.
And as Funke Akindele celebrates her 49th birthday, why not say Happy Birthday by catching Where Is Mr Right? on Prime Video?
Happy Birthday to the Box Office Queen!
