SCREENNOLLY THROWBACK - Omoniyi

Omoniyi is an intriguing family drama written by Sola Asedeko (Abeni, Thunderbolt), exploring the weight of parental responsibilities and what happens when emotions, pride, and pressure collide.

Starring Fathia Balogun and Yemi Solade alongside Jibola Oredola and Femi Adebayo, the story follows Joke, a hot-tempered mother whose constant clashes with her husband, Bayo, create a tense home for their three children — Kikelomo, Ola, and Folakemi. When Bayo walks away, leaving her to shoulder the family’s burden alone, financial strain forces Joke to move in with her sister Mope — played by Asedeko — and her husband, Dele. It’s a decision that ultimately triggers devastating consequences as work pulls Joke further away from her children.

Omoniyi is one of those family dramas that hits close to home. One of the film’s strongest assets is its dialogue — a seamless blend of English and deeply rooted Yoruba proverbs that give the story cultural depth and emotional sharpness. The proverbs land with intention, often saying more than the characters themselves. The editing is equally impressive, cleverly intercutting scenes to mirror the emotional tension between Joke and Dele, heightening the drama without overstatement.

The film also features Bimbo Oshin, Akin Lewis, and child actors Olakunle Ahmed and Anu Otuyo, who add further emotional texture to an already compelling narrative.
