Based on the novel by Femi Osofisan, who also adapted it for the screen, the film follows a devoted single mother struggling to raise her young son, Kashimawo, in extreme poverty
Despite their hardships, Maami (Akindele) a loving, resilient woman determined to shield her son from the father he has never known—a man whose past is shrouded in a dark secret. As Kashimawo grows older, he fulfils his dream of becoming an international football star, becoming a source of national pride. Sadly, Maami does not live long enough to witness the rewards of her sacrifices. Meanwhile, the truth about Kashimawo's family gradually unfolds, revealing long-hidden secrets that shape his destiny.
Also featuring Tamilore Kuboye, Olumide Bakare and Ayomide Abatti as the young Kashimawo, Maami stood out not only for its heartfelt storytelling but also for its exceptional production values. Released during the height of the Nollywood DVD era, the film showcased Tunde Kelani's trademark attention to detail, rich cinematography and technical excellence, delivering a visually accomplished production that was far ahead of the prevailing industry standard. A touching tale of love, sacrifice and the enduring strength of a mother's devotion, Maami remains one of the standout Nigerian dramas of its generation.
