Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Wright is making a highly anticipated return to the big screen with The Return of Omotara Johnson, the sequel to her classic hit Omotara Johnson. The film is set to premiere in July
The upcoming release marks another major chapter in Bukky Wright’s return to mainstream Nollywood after many years away. In the sequel, the actress reprises her titular role as Omotara Johnson, popularly known as O.J., one of the most memorable female anti-heroines in Yoruba Nollywood cinema.
Originally released in 2009, Omotara Johnson became a fan favourite for its intense storytelling, emotional drama, and unforgettable lead performance. The film followed the story of a dangerous and manipulative woman whose obsession, betrayal, and violent choices made the character both feared and iconic among audiences.
Although the full cast of the sequel has not yet been officially unveiled, the original Omotara Johnson featured notable Nollywood stars, including Chidi Mokeme, Tayo Alausa, Femi Brainard, Jide Kosoko, Toyin Abraham, Iyabo Ojo, and Yomi Fash-Lanso.
The sequel, directed by Adeoluwa Owu, has already sparked excitement online. Early promotional materials confirming the July release dates have continued to build anticipation around the project and Ms Wright’s return to one of her most defining screen roles.
Recent years have seen renewed interest in legacy Yoruba stories, with productions such as Ori: The Rebirth and The Return of Arinzo drawing attention from audiences eager to reconnect with iconic characters and culturally rooted storytelling. Like those productions, The Return of Omotara Johnson taps into a blend of nostalgia and modern cinematic appeal — a formula increasingly shaping Nollywood’s theatrical landscape.
Industry observers also see the project as part of Nollywood’s growing trend of revisiting classic titles for contemporary cinema audiences. As nostalgia-driven storytelling continues to resonate with viewers, The Return of Omotara Johnson could connect with both fans of the original film and a younger generation discovering the franchise for the first time.
Distributed by Nile Entertainment, The Return of Omotara Johnson premieres on July 5 and begins screening nationwide on July 10.
