Based on the Bass Reeves novels by Sidney Thompson, the eight-part TV series, created by Chad Feehan, tells the story of Bass Reeves, a former slave who rose to become one of the most successful lawmen in U.S. history. Born into slavery in 1838, Reeves would go on to serve as a Deputy U.S. Marshal, earning a reputation for his exceptional tracking skills, courage, and ability that brought more than 3,000 fugitives to justice.
Directed by Christiana Alexandria Voros and Damian Marcano, the series also features a strong supporting cast, including Lauren E. Banks, Demi Singleton, Forest Goodluck, Dennis Quaid, and the late Donald Sutherland.
Oyelowo, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, is no stranger to portraying influential historical figures. The actor earned widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, and with Lawmen: Bass Reeves, he once again brings to life a Black trailblazer whose impact on history deserves wider recognition.
For years, many believed Reeves should have enjoyed the same legendary status as famous Wild West lawmen such as Wyatt Earp. Yet despite his achievements, his story remained largely absent from mainstream film and television. The Paramount Original series, now streaming on Netflix, helps correct that historical oversight by introducing his legacy to a new generation of viewers.
