South African drama, The Valley of a Thousand Hills is a brilliant effort to showcase a society’s negative perception of lesbianism and an attempt to correct it. Starring Sibongukuhle Nkosi and Mandisa Vilakazi and brilliantly co-written and directed by Bonie Sithebe, it focuses on two young ladies who are in love but cannot openly express their relationship.
Vilakazi plays Nophiso, the innocent lesbian daughter of the village chief who, by tradition, is set to marry her off to Vika. Nkosi plays the outspoken and confident, Thenjiwe, whose mother believes that she is possessed by a demonic disease and would rather send her off for healing. Thenjiwe is not just Nonphiso’s true love but also Vika’s only sister.
The Valley of a Thousand Hills, also starring Wiseman Mncube, and Glen Gabela, may not be as entertaining, but definitely, the feature-length movie offers a captivating compelling and convincing message.
