African Queens: History of 17th century Angolan woman king, Njinga kicks off new Netflix documentary series celebrating African Womanhood

With the releases of global blockbusters; Woman King and Wakanda Forever, a new trend of African periodic movies, perhaps focusing on extolling African womanhood, is in the offing. And now, Netflix’s dramatised docuseries, African Queens, seems to be tapping into that potential.

The first season of the four series starts with the African Queen, Njinga (Adesuwa Oni), the 17th-century female warrior and Woman King who fought, alongside her sisters: Kambu (Chipo Kureya) and Funji ( Marilyn Nadabe), to resist the Portuguese invasion of Ndongo (now known as Angola)

Though most of it is dramatised, it also features a crop of academics and historians as ‘talking heads’ to shed more insights on the feature documentary narrated and executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith.
