It was a terrorist attack that also went as far as damaging and labelling the Islamic religion. But terrorism, though popularised by Muslim extremists, is an evil act entirely against humanity and no religion that champions faith and beliefs advocates for such. This is the underlying theme of Qasim L Bashir's emotionally charged family drama, "Mooz - Lum.
Evans as Tariq with disicplinarian Dad, Hassan played by Guenveur Smith |
Despite being released in 2010, this film, featuring Evan Ross, Roger Guenveur Smith, Kimberly Drummond, and Nia Long, with a special appearance by Danny Glover, remains highly relevant, particularly in addressing issues related to parental guidance and upbringing, especially in the context of religion.
Evan leads as a young, fresh undergraduate, Tariq, whose dad, Hassan (Guernveur-Smith), raised him and his sister, Taqua (Drummond), in a very strict Muslim upbringing. Like most youth, Tariq had a mind of their own and often questioned the stringent practices like the ones he experienced while at the Muslim secondary school. He had a sense of his own but wasn't allowed the 'Freedom of Expression.'
Nia Long plays Safiyan, Tariq's who has also tired of the Hassan's strict muslim discpline |
On the other hand, his mother, Safyah (Long), who also struggles with her husband's strict approach to parenting, has requested a divorce and is living separately with Taqua.
The tragic events of 9/11 forced everyone to reevaluate their beliefs, raising essential questions about whether acts of terror are genuinely linked to any religion or faith, particularly Islam.
The heartfelt family drama based on actual events and also written by Bashir is streaming on Prime Video.
