A STREAMING WEEKEND WITH TOYIN ABRAHAM

Toyin Abrahams Ajeyemi is one of the screen sensations Nollywood will always be proud of. She has years of experience to prove it, blockbuster movies to show for it, numerous awards to justify, and a cult following that passionately adores her, attesting to the indelible mark she has on the hearts of millions of fans who eagerly anticipate every project she undertakes.

Originating from the Yoruba sector, known then as Toyin Aimakhu, she debuted in Bukky Wright's 2003 film, "Dugbe Dugbe Mbo." Her journey continued with roles in films like "Esu Masemi" (2006), "Beyo Oku," "Niniola," and "Eniyan Dudu" (2007), to mention a few. Venturing into production in 2008 with "Itan," she birthed her first blockbuster, "Alakada," in 2009, leading to subsequent successful instalments of "Alakada 1 & 2" and "The Reloaded."

Alakada didn’t just make herself an A-list celebrity; it crossed her over to other genres and sectors in the industry, starring and featuring in various movies like Omoni Oboli’s Okafor Law and Wives on Strike - The Revolution, Hakkunde with Frank Donga, and Celebrity Marriage to mention a few. In 2018, she recorded her second blockbuster with the movie Ghost and the Tout. It was a huge box office success, raking in 30 million in its first and eventually ranked 5th highest grossing for 2018, before moving on to the streams at Netflix.

In 2019, Abraham delivered a stellar performance alongside Timini Egbuson in the comedy-drama Elevator Baby. Directed by Akay Mason, the movie listed as one of the highest-ranking box office movies with a Bollywood remake, “Thank You Brother,” earned her two nominations and an AMVCA win for Best Actress in 2020.

Building on the successes of the Alakada series, she released a fifth instalment, Fate of Alakada. And in Abraham’s blockbuster tradition, The comedy flick directed by Kayode Kasum recorded the Highest grossing film for 2020.

In 2021, Abraham achieved another box office feat with the release of The Prophetess. Despite its mixed rave reviews and the ‘COVID-restricted seating capacity’, The Prophetess, directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, still grossed an impressive 108 million in its 4th week of screening. In 2022, she continued her success streak by surpassing the Prophetess box office earnings when she released Ijakumo - The Stripper.

Toyin Abraham is undoubtedly a beloved and influential figure in Nollywood. And with the unwavering support of her dedicated fan base, each project she undertakes adds another chapter to her illustrious career.
