ADIRE : New movie exploring Faith Feminity and Fashion streams on Netflix

ADIRE, starring Kehinde Bankole, Funlola Aofeyibi Raimi and Yvonne Jegede, alongside a brilliant cast, is a compelling slow burner focusing on ways religion can adversely affect the lives of married women

The two-hour-plus comedy-drama written by Jack’enneth Opukeme (Battle on Buka Street) tells the story of Adire (Bankole), a woman with aspirations beyond her current circumstances as a prostitute. Determined to become a fashion designer, she seizes an opportunity to escape from her guardian and pimp, Captain, played by Yemi Blaq and start afresh in a small Oyo town. However, her journey encounters resistance from a group of church members, particularly the women folk who see her as a threat to their matrimonial homes.

Ironically, one of the church members, Shalewa (Jegede), whose husband, Tobi (played by Kelechi Udengbe), idolises Adire as a “fine gal smoking cigarette”, becomes the catalyst for a change in perception, recognising the genuine warmth and charm in Adire and her pursuit of a better life.

Adire could have easily integrated into the community, but the uptight church women leader, Folashade (Aofiyebi-Raimi), stands in her way. Fueled by her unresolved issues, Folashade deems her a sinner, advocating for her isolation from the church community.

Directed by Adeoluwa Owu (A Tribe Called Judah). The cast, which includes Lizzy Jay, Ifeanyi Kalu Femi Branch and Mike Afolarin, did a brilliant job. Suffice it to say that Funlola Aofiyebi Raimi (renowned for Tinsel and House of Secrets) adds an extra layer of brilliance to the ensemble.

Recommended to watch on Netflix
