Y Naija's TOP NOLLYWOOD 100 - Brilliant Initiative with Questionable Credibility

Y’Naija recently unveiled "The Nollywood 100," a feature list aimed at recognising and honouring the brightest talents influencing the growth of Industry, which is undoubtedly a commendable initiative in a time when Nigeria seeks indigenous validation. However, the collaboration between Y’Naija and EbonyLife, a film studio actively involved in content production, raises legitimate concerns about the credibility of the listing.

Ebonylife, much like other prominent production outfits such as Inkblot, KAP motion/Golden Effects Anthill, Greoh, Scene One, and Film One, is primarily engaged in producing films and TV series. Collaborating with EbonyLife in the decision-making process of a list that evaluates the industry it operates prompts intriguing questions.

The listing's incorporation of streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and ShowMax is equally perplexing. These platforms serve mainly as distribution channels for content rather than being involved in its creation. The rationale behind including them in a list that aims to acknowledge the personalities responsible for producing content raises doubt. One could draw a simple analogy from celebrating the various pasta manufacturers and include Shoprite, a chain of supermarkets that sells the product.

Despite presenting itself as a comprehensive industry overview, the subjective trajectory and questionable credibility of this listing warrant careful consideration.
