The six-part drama, commissioned by BBC One and BBC iPlayer, is adapted from Nikki May’s acclaimed novel Wahala and written by BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Theresa Ikoko. The series is led by acclaimed British-Nigerian actresses Cush Jumbo, Susan Wokoma, and Adelayo Adedayo, who play three Nigerian-British friends navigating loyalty, identity, ambition, and betrayal in London.
Genevieve Nnaji joins the production in a significant supporting role alongside Deborah Ayorinde, adding further star power to the ensemble cast. Set in London, Wahala follows the lives of the close-knit friends whose seemingly stable bond begins to unravel after the arrival of a charismatic new acquaintance. What starts as glamour, friendship, and social ambition slowly spirals into secrets, tension, and emotional conflict.
While details about Genevieve Nnaji’s character are still being kept under wraps, her inclusion in the project has already sparked major reactions online, with fans celebrating the actress’s return to acting after maintaining a relatively low public profile in recent years.
Widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most influential screen icons, Nnaji remains a defining figure in African cinema. Her last major directorial project, Lionheart, made history as Nigeria’s first Netflix Original film and further expanded her global recognition internationally.
The BBC drama also reflects the growing global appetite for African stories and Nigerian talent on major international television and streaming platforms. Production for Wahala is currently underway, although an official release date has not yet been announced.
For many Nollywood fans, however, one thing is already certain — Genevieve Nnaji is back on screen, and audiences are watching closely.
