Strained a new movie from 'Black Rose' director, Okechukwu Oku, offers another simple yet engaging narrative. Starring Tracey George and award-winning actress Queen Nwokoye, it tells the touching story of a strained relationship between a mother, Abigail and her daughter, Ebere
Ebere (George) has just given birth to a baby girl. Although she and husband, Ozo played by Samuel Nnabuike, are managing the newborn's needs, they could use some help. The situation becomes more pressing when Ozo is called away for work in Abuja, leaving Ebere in need of a trained hand. He first asks his sister for help, but when she can't make it, he reaches out to his mother-in-law, Abigail (Nwokoye) despite Ebere's reluctance to have her involved due to a long-standing estrangement. Ozo sees this as a chance to mend the relationship while ensuring proper care for the baby.
Abigail agrees to help with "Omugwo" the traditional Igbo practice of caring for a new mother and her child, but she's met with considerable hostility from Ebere. Despite the friction, Abigail remains focused on her task, determined to bridge the emotional gap and provide the support her daughter and grandchild need.
Strained written by Oyinyechukwu Amadi (Ambivalent), brilliantly explores the themes of motherhood and reconciliation, using the Igbo tradition of Omugwo, and social context as a backdrop. The film is a compelling examination of family dynamics and the complexities of mending broken relationships, brought to life by a strong cast that also includes Padita Agu.
